Our Model UN Program

Model United Nations has been a prominent intellectual sport at UMBC since 1995. We attend multiple conferences throughout each semester, such as the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conferences held in the Fall and Spring, as well as other collegiate-run conferences in the DC and Virginia area. We're working on building our team and making a name for ourselves at these conferences. Model United Nations is also offered as a one-credit upper level political science class at UMBC; but unlike other schools that offer credit for conference, we take a more holistic approach at preparing our students by giving them the resources they need to start, and letting them take the lead on how they get ready for committee. We pride ourselves in being hard workers and great diplomats in all of our endeavors.

Unlike other intellectual sports at UMBC, Model United Nations is almost completely student-run. Our faculty advisor, Dr. Cynthia Hody, lets us take the reins on where we go and what we do as a team. Our "coaches" are fellow students, who understand the commitment of being on the team and the difficulties that may arise from it. Our team puts in all of the effort to keep the team afloat and do their best in committee while being full-time students. This makes our team special - we're not only training diplomats, we're training self-driven leaders that are prepared to succeed in whatever their career path is.

Our team, although housed in the Political Science department, has students in a variety of majors. For example, the president (and secretary general) is a biology major, the vice president (and one of the under-secretary generals) is a mechanical engineering major, our secretary is a health administration/public policy major, and our treasurer majors in economics. Our executive board's diverse educational background, as well as the range of majors that our team have, show that this team draws the attention of students from all disciplines at UMBC and shows the well-rounded educational opportunities that Model UN provides.
